In December 2022, Jing Xiao, Ph.D. candidate in Geography, attended the American Geophysical Union Fall Meeting, in Chicago, IL. Jing experienced many oral sessions, poster sessions and keynote talks related to her work, particularly those in polar firn observation and modeling, Greenland surface mass balance and ice sheet hydrology. She noted, “This meeting provided me with the extremely valuable opportunity to present my work to experts and peers in my field. I gave a talk on my research investigating the spatial variability of thick, refrozen ice slabs in firn and the impact of local topographic factors, using ground-penetrating radar data. I also joined the diversity in Earth and space science education session as a co-author on a presentation about designing an inclusive physical geography field course. I met and connected with colleagues and potential collaborators, learned about the latest developments in polar firn research, and received useful feedback on my talk, which is incredibly beneficial to my dissertation work.”
