For over 40 years, Diane Burko has travelled around the Americas and Europe, taking photographs and making sketches of volcanoes, hot spring fissures, glaciers, mountains, and rain forests in order to paint these landscapes in her Philadelphia studio.
In 2013 Burko was invited to join research voyages to Antarctica and the Arctic in the company of other artists, scientists and journalists. These paintings turn call attention to the visual facts of retreating glaciers, melting ice caps, and rising sea levels. The exhibition is a focus of the Byrne Seminar “Arctic Lens: A Journey to the Great North through Film” taught by Rutgers Climate Institute affiliates Professor Asa Rennermalm (Geography) and Professor Hal Salzman (Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy) in the Spring of 2014.
